South Salt Lake Scenes: Photography Through a Young Adult Lens
Empowering our youth to tell their authentic stories through a camera lens

SOUTH SALT LAKE, UT, August 28, 2026 – South Salt Lake has been working with city youth over the past two weeks to empower them to tell their authentic stories through a camera lens, culminating with a photo exhibit hosted at Signed & Numbered on August 28.

Promise South Salt Lake, a department of the city that provides free youth and community programs, wanted to learn what teens are interested in doing in the afterschool hours, what may be preventing them from accessing those opportunities, or what else they are already involved in that could be strengthened. To answer these questions they partnered with South Salt Lake Arts to organize a storytelling workshop with a team led by Mars Cameron which included local photographer Darius Ray and poet Dr. Cydney Caradona. Following the workshop, the youth were instructed to spend two weeks photographing moments in their day-to-day lives, and provide captions that explain the photos’ meaning and importance.

"The simple act of letting the youth tell their own stories through a camera awakens their confidence and forever changes how they look at the world around them."
– Britney Helmers, Executive Director, South Salt Lake Arts
